Christ Church, Spitalfields

Patrick Baty carried out the analysis of the paint at Christ Church, Spitalfield

Nicholas Hawksmoor’s famous baroque church had fallen into terrible disrepair and came within a whisker of demolition.  The Friends of Christ Church was formed in 1976, but it was 20 years before a Lottery grant of £2.4m was secured to save the exterior, with further funds following in 2002 to save the inside of the church.

I established the original decorative treatment of the interior of the church and advised on the many difficult technical issues that were encountered. Special paint that could cope with the very difficult conditions in the church were mixed and supplied by my company Papers and Paints.
