Great Conservatory, Syon House

Patrick Baty carried out an analysis of the paint in the Great Conservatory of Syon House

The 3rd Duke of Northumberland commissioned Charles Fowler to build a new conservatory in 1826, the first of its kind to be built out of gunmetal, Bath stone and glass.  I was commissioned to carry out the paint analysis of the Conservatory.  The ironwork was originally primed with what appears to have been a proprietary “Anti-Corrosive” paint. The first finish coat was an off-white / stone colour, which would have had a mid sheen. A similar scheme was encountered on the ironwork of The Royal Albert Bridge.
