This was an early lesson on why one shouldn’t believe what one sees. When I saw the interior of this 18th century house in London’s Cavendish Square I thought that most of the interiors were original. However, having carried out an analysis of the paint in a number of areas it was clear that there had been much early twentieth century intervention.

Interestingly, I wrote a short story set in this building (divided into flats in the story, much of the action of which takes place on the first floor). Cavendish Square had fascinated me since 1967 and the buildings are something I’ve always admired – and imagined.
Although it was many years ago that I investigated this building, I do remember it having a particularly fine staircase.
