Syon House

Patrick Baty has carried out various paint and colour-related tasks at Syon House

In the 18th century, Hugh Percy, 1st Duke of Northumberland, commissioned architect and interior designer Robert Adam and landscape designer Lancelot “Capability” Brown to redesign the house and estate. Work began on the interior reconstruction project in 1762. Five large rooms on the west, south and east sides of the House, were completed before work ceased in 1769.

I have carried out a number of projects at Syon House over the years. These have ranged from the paint analysis of the Great Conservatory, the Dairy and Confectioner’s Kitchen to advice on paint technical and colour matters.

I also carried out a colour survey of the John Fowler decorative scheme in the entrance hall (below) in order to be able to reproduce the colours should they be required in the future.

The John Fowler scheme, which you see here, has since been overpainted

The Brizlee Tower, on the Duke of Northumberland’s estate in Alnwick, has also been investigated.
