That’s a wonderful painting. I’m guessing the Black Brunswicker is the dog? And why is there a portrait of Napoleon on the wall – as a mark of respect for an old vanquished foe or a current one?
….Who are the figures…they look similar to Albert and Victoria.

Millais was a close friend of John Leech and if I remember correctly they went on holiday together. Millais drew a portrait of Leech which is in the NPG.

Thank you Andre. The full story can be seen here – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Brunswicker Yes, Millais and Leech were friends and both served in the regiment. Charles Dicken’s daughter, Kate, was the female model and she was married to Charles Perugini, who also served in the regiment.
