The Old Royal Observatory

Patrick Baty carried out analysis of the early painted finishes in the Old Royal Observatory, Greenwich.

The Royal Observatory, Greenwich, was commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II and is best known as the location of the prime meridian.

I advised on the colour of the time ball (the red-painted ball on the roof – see above), which was installed by Astronomer Royal John Pond in 1833. It still drops daily to mark the exact moment of 1 p.m. (13:00) year round (GMT during winter and BST during summer).

Patrick Baty carried out paint analysis of the Octagon Room of Flamsteed House and advised on decoration

I also assisted with the decoration of the Octagon Room in Flamsteed House, having taken samples of the paint layers for analysis.
