The Royal Observatory, Greenwich, was commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II and is best known as the location of the prime meridian.
I advised on the colour of the time ball (the red-painted ball on the roof – see above), which was installed by Astronomer Royal John Pond in 1833. It still drops daily to mark the exact moment of 1 p.m. (13:00) year round (GMT during winter and BST during summer).
I also assisted with the decoration of the Octagon Room in Flamsteed House, having taken samples of the paint layers for analysis.
