Polesden Lacey

Patrick Baty matched paint colours inside the house and worked on the Memorial Arch designed by Sir Hugh Casson

Polesden Lacey, Surrey, was once lived in by the poet and playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan (whose London house I have also worked on – see Hertford Street). In 1906 it was purchased by Mrs Ronald Greville, a legendary Edwardian hostess, and her husband. The house was converted by Mewès and Davis, the architects of the newly built Ritz Hotel. Mrs Greville was most famous as a society hostess and philanthropist.

In the days before spectrophotometry!

I was asked to colour-match a number of paints in the interior and to devise a new colour scheme for the Memorial Arch designed by Sir Hugh Casson.

Hi there, great article! I was wondering if you ever matched or are familiar with what the colour of the Polesden Lacey exterior facade is at all? Warm wishes, Sara

Thanks Sara. Yes, we matched it and gave it a code number. It’s PP1/5/95A at Papers and Paints. However, we might have to reformulate it because some of the original colourants are now obsolete.

This is incredibly useful, thank you. Can I find a visual reference of that paint colour anywhere online at all?
