Hertford Street, Mayfair

Patrick Baty has been commissioned to carry out the paint analysis of various elements. He has also advised on paint colour

The house is believed to have been completed shortly after 1768 by a bricklayer, Henry
Holland and his architect son, also Henry. The first leaseholder was General John Burgoyne
(1722-92), who commissioned Robert Adam to produce designs for the decoration of the
main reception rooms.

The house was occupied by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the playwright, in 1795 and he lived
there until 1802 – I have also worked on his country house Polesden Lacey. From 1803 until the late 1930s the house remained in domestic use, being converted into offices shortly before the Second World War.

In 1964 the ceilings were repainted to correspond with Adam’s original design drawings.
The house was purchased for conversion back into residential use in the mid 1990s, but it
remained empty until it was put up for sale in 1998. It has remained empty until the present
refurbishment.

I was commissioned to carry out the paint analysis of various elements and have also advised on paint colour.
