Culzean is perhaps the most romantic of the neo-Gothic castles designed and built by Robert Adam. Built on the cliffs on the Ayrshire coast it has a magnificent grand oval staircase and extensive estate buildings.
I was able to establish the decorative history of the exteriors of twenty outlying structures ranging from stables to potting sheds to ornamental gates. At the same time I revealed how the staircase had been painted since the 1790s.
